EPA AND DHA ACTIONS
Intestine: Anti-inflammatory effect
Omega-3 PUFAs have demonstrated a beneficial effect in controlling inflammation in intestinal disorders in dogs. Marked suppression of intestinal inflammatory activity, mainly in the duodenum of dogs. Omega-3 PUFAs can be beneficial for the animal's intestinal health and well-being. Omega-3 PUFAs help maintain the integrity of the intestinal barrier, thus preventing the translocation of intestinal contents into the circulation.
Heart: Antithrombotic and antiarrhythmic effect.
Cardiovascular diseases: Dogs with heart failure have a low plasma concentration of EPA. In addition to helping reduce cardiac arrhythmias, fish oil treatment reduces cachexia and improves food intake in some dogs with chronic heart failure - induced anorexia.
Kidney: Anti-inflammatory and vasodilator effect.
In dogs with CKD, the administration of omega-3 reduces proteinuria, prevents glomerular hypertension, and decreases the production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids.
Joints: Anti-inflammatory effect.
One possibility for relieving osteoarthritis is to reduce the production of PGE2 after the supply of omega-3 PUFAs, which compete with arachidonic acid as substrates for COX and LOX enzymes.
