What is Scalibor® ?
Scalibor ® is an external antiparasitic collar for dogs that contains deltamethrin, a powerful insecticide and acaricide with repellent (anti-feeding) properties. Protects your dog against sandflies (the transmitter of leishmaniasis) for 12 months and also against ticks and mosquitoes ( Culex pipens ) for 6 months.
How it works?
The Scalibor ® collar gradually releases deltamethrin , the active substance, and allows it to be spread throughout the dog's body through the skin lipid layer. In a PVC matrix, deltamethrin (DTM) binds to a plasticizing agent, triphenyl phosphate. Combined, they form complexes that are released regularly and continuously through friction with the surface of the collar and migrate through the lipid layer of the skin (see diagram).
Unlike conventional collars, this original patented technology allows deltamethrin to be applied directly and exclusively to the animal's skin and fur. There is no release through evaporation, no loss of active substance and, consequently, it has no odor.
For optimal protection, taking into account the time it takes for the animal to spread, the collar should be applied one week before the dog is introduced into an infested environment.
EFFECTIVENESS AGAINST FLEBOTOM BITES
Repellent effect against sandflies for 12 months. In recent years, due to changes in weather conditions, the risk of transmission of leishmaniasis by sandflies has increased.
For this reason, more than 2 years ago, MSD Animal Health decided to conduct new, longer-term studies of the effectiveness of Scalibor ® to investigate whether its high levels of repellency against sand flies adapt to these new climatic conditions.
In studies carried out (1) , Scalibor ® demonstrated a repellent (anti-feeding) efficacy against sandflies of between 94% and 98%, for 12 months.
TARGETED EFFECTIVENESS AGAINST DOG TICKS
Deltamethrin is active against ticks at all stages of development: larvae, nymphs and adults. Even in cases of severe and repeated infestations, the Scalibor ® collar is proven effective against ticks. The infestations reproduced in the trials were severe (25 to 50 ticks) and repeated (10 successive infestations) (2) . The following graph illustrates the results of a study, conducted on two groups of 8 beagle dogs (one treated group and the other untreated control group), with repeated infestations with 25 ticks. The average efficacy of SCALIBOR ® was 93.6% up to day 183 (6 months after collar placement).
EFFECTIVENESS AGAINST MOSQUITO BITES
A laboratory study conducted with the Scalibor ® collar (3) showed a greater than 98% antifeedant effect against adult Culex pipiens mosquitoes over the 27-week study period. Scalibor ™ thus prevented most mosquitoes from feeding on the blood of treated dogs.
