Have you ever noticed your dog wiping his paws on the floor after doing his business? Some owners call this "scratching" or "kicking" the floor. My dog Paco does this all the time! After doing “number 1” or “number 2”, he steps to the side and starts rubbing his paws on the grass. While I think this is super cute (it looks like it's dancing a little), many pet owners are confused.
Many people think that dogs are trying to cover up the dirt, like cats do in the litter box. After all, when a dog starts kicking backwards, the grass usually flies in the direction of the pee or poop (hopefully not where you are!). But that's not the real reason.
In fact, dogs do this to mark their territory. Their paws have scent glands that produce pheromones. So, when your dog rubs his paws on the grass, he is leaving his scent for other dogs to detect. Since every dog has a unique scent, when yours wipes his paws on the grass after going to the bathroom, he's basically signing off on his "work."
Experts say it also has a visual aspect. The act of scratching can attract the attention of other dogs. Additionally, the scratches on the floor act as a visual marker.
A common question is whether only males do this. The short answer is no; This behavior is not exclusive to males. Both male and female dogs do this, as it is an instinctive behavior.
So, did it become clearer? Now you know that your puppy is not just trying to cover up the dirt, but rather leaving a clear message to other dogs in the area! 🐾
